Cuatro canciones:

Todas estas canciones para soprano y piano se basan en poemas de Francis Burdett Money-Coutts (1852-1923), que firmó sus obras con el nombre de Mountjoy. Poeta y dramaturgo, Money-Coutts era nieto del banquero Francis Burdett (1770-1844) y sobrino de la escritora Angela Georgina Coutts, baronesa de Latymer, tan notable como para mantener una larga correspondencia con Charles Dickens y haber sido retratada por Sir William Charles Ross (National Portrait Gallery of London).

La última serie de canciones, sobre textos de Money-Coutts, fue compuesta por Albéniz en París y las dedicó a su buen amigo el compositor Gabriel Fauré. Lleva por título Quatre melodies en su primera edición. Estas cuatro canciones, verdadero testamento musical del gran compositor español, tienen texto inglés, pero fueron traducidas al francés por Michel Dimitri Calvocoressi.

Las Quatre melodies fueron publicadas en París por Rouart, Lerrolle. En la traducción de Calvocoressi aparecen con estos títulos: Quand je te vois souffrir; Le paradis retrouvé, Le refuge y Amor summa injuria. Son bellisimas canciones altamente expresivas, con un complejo acompañamiento pianístico, reminiscente del piano de Iberia, y una armonía muy cromática que permite un discurso modulante.

Albéniz compuso las Quatre melodies durante el segundo semestre de 1908, es decir, pocos meses antes de su muerte, ocurrida el 18 de mayo de 1909 en la localidad vasco francesa de Cambó-les-Bains.
Las Quatre Mélodies o Four Songs, han sido transcritas para soprano, arpa y orquesta de cuerdas por el director, organista y compositor vasco Gorka Sierra Larrinaga (Bilbao, 1955). Gorka Sierra ha llevado a cabo una versión urtetx, fiel al manuscrito original de Albéniz para voz y piano, es decir, nota por nota de lo que allí puso el compositor español.

El éxito de las obras de Gorka Sierra para voces y dominio de la orquesta han llevado al prestigioso musicólogo Andrés Ruiz Tarazona a encargarle la orquestación de la presente edición llevada a cabo por Fidelio Música Editorial en tres versiones diferentes, para voz y piano, para arpa voz y orquesta de cuerdas y para voz y orquesta sinfónica.

All these songs originally for high voice and piano are based on poems by Francis Burdett Money-Coutts (1852-1923), who signed his works under the name of Mountjoy. Poet and playwright, Money-Coutts was the grandson of the banker Francis Burdett (1770-1844) and nephew of the philanthropist Baroness of Latymer, a good friend of Charles Dickens and whose portrait by Sir William Charles Ross hangs in the National Portrait Gallery in London.

These four songs were composed by Albeniz in Paris and he dedicated them to his good friend the composer Gabriel Fauré. The Quatre mélodies, a true musical legacy of the great Spanish composer were originally composed in English but were subsequently translated into French by Dimitri Calvocoressi.

The Quatre mélodies were published in Paris by Rouart, Lerrolle. In the translation by Calvocoressi they were given the titles: Quand je te vois souffrir (In Sickness and Health) Le Paradis retrouvé (Paradise Regained), Le Refuge (The Retreat) and Amor, summa injuria. These extremely beautiful and wonderfully expressive songs have a complex piano accompaniment reminiscent of the piano in Albeniz’s Iberia and an incredible chromatic harmony creating a modulation in the music.

Albeniz composed the Quatre mélodies during the second half of 1908, just few months before his death in May 18th of 1909 in the French village of Cambó-les-Bains.
The Quatre mélodies of Four Songs have been transcribed for soprano voice, harp and string orchestra, by the Spanish conductor and composer Gorka Sierra Larrinaga (Bilbao 1955), whose success as a conductor is well recognised all around Spain and abroad.
